A 37-year-old financial analyst from Maryland was yanked off a Norwegian Cruise Line ship in Bermuda and charged with importing marijuana.

Bermuda's Royal Gazette says George Koumoulis, from Abingdon, Maryland, was nabbed with 7.66 grams of pot.

He had traveled to Bermuda last week on the Norwegian Dawn on a weeklong cruise from New York.

The paper quotes a prosecutor as saying other passengers had complained they smelled cannabis smoke coming from the cabin Koumoulis shared with his brother.

Ship crew went in and found Koumoulis alone. They also found two Ziploc bags containing an "unknown substance" and three packages of cigarette papers.

Police came onboard, and when questioned the man admitted the drugs were his, the Gazette says. Koumoulis was taken to Somerset Police Station.

Appearing this week in Magistrates' Court, Koumoulis said he had made a "very, very stupid mistake," the newspaper reports.

Bermuda has strict drug laws, and in addition to being held on the island nation, and having to miss the rest of his cruise, Koumoulis was fined $1,500.

This is not the first such incident in recent years.

In October 2008, a Norwegian Dawn passenger from Maine was also charged $1,500, for carrying a similar amount of marijuana. And last year a passenger on the Norwegian Majesty out of Boston was fined $1,500 when police discovered he had a dozen joints.

I feel something need to be done about the cruise ships that deport from Boston.I love the idea that there are ships leaving Black Falcon and the convience,BUTTTTTTTTTTTT,I have seen alot of vandalizism to the beautiful ships done by young teenagers that are not being accountabkle for their actions. They parents have no controll and there are alot of underage drinking. This need to be addressed. There are other people traveling that paid for a relaxing cruise and have to put up with the unnecesary proplems of other passengers children.I feel there is a need for strickter rules and better parent accountability. If there child feel like they can go around and destroy ship property then maybe the parents should be responsible for the cost of fixing it.I have been on other cruise vessels, but was very upset of Bostonians acting the way they do,Take responsibility for your children on these trips. The crew members are not your babysitters. Also Do you teach your child that drinking out of another passengers alcoholic beverage is safe.Rah to the crew for putting up with this outrageous conduct

Never again!!

My 24 week pregnant daughter was recently taken off the Dawn after customs officers stated the dogs had alerted to her room for pot. She swore she did not bring any on. She was forced off the ship and brought to the police station where they photographed her and took DNA and fingerprints. They presented to her a one-hitter that had residue in the chamber that belonged to her. She states she did not even know it was in her bag. The customs agents had searched her room and went through her purse while we were "enjoying" the beach. We were told we she was "guilty until PROVEN innocent" in Bermuda. We were strongly "encouraged" to have her flown back home at our expense to avoid having to pay a $5000.00 fine by U.S. Customs. This was told to us by the head of secruity for the cruise line. He stated that if she checked off the ship, he would not have to report it to customs and the issue would disappear. They used intense scare tactics (they told us a man was doing 30 months in jail for snubbing the authorities in Bermuda). We did spend over $450.00 to get her out of that "God Awful" place and will never go back. We would also NEVER cruise with Norweigan again!!

U.S. law requires ships sailing from U.S. ports to document and report all illegal activities either reported to them, or that the ship's personnel identify. This includes violations of local laws in ports. Failure to do so will subject the cruise line to heavy fines and possible criminal prosecution. If the ship's security people were told about the marijuana and didn't take the required actions, they could be in serious trouble. Required action doesn't mean "hey, dude, cool it with the grass or put a towel under the door."

Any respectable cruiseline absent suspecting someone of actually being a traveling drug dealer (side note: all luggage is checked prior to embarkment by US Customs for large quantity of drugs and passengers are pre screened on a list days ahead) should have had the common decency to stop by and say hey, there have been complaints about marijuana so please respect other ship passengers. Did they really have to contact the Bermuda police and ruin this guy's vacation????? Pathetic behavior by this cruise line. Pathetic.

I will now boycot Norwegian Cruise line and encourage all of my friends and family to do the same. How dare they ruin someone's vacation like that. Absolutely no reason for it.

It isn't surprising that people from Maryland and Maine were rescribe busted for pot. Both of those states have relaxed marijuana laws and permit doctors to prescribe medical marijuana. These passengers got used to not worrying about getting busted in their home states. They forgot that most of the country and the world don't allow possession of even small amounts. If they hadn't been stoned, they probably would have remembered to leave their pot at home.

It's illegal. He got caught. Don't whine about paying the penalty. Put the joint down, get off your butt and change the laws if you don't like them.

Thank You, I'm sick of this guy also. If he is so rich and single, what is he doing scamming people on-line?

1/4oz., Importing? lol Sounds like a scam between Norwegian cruise lines and the Bermuda police.
I know I have smoked on another cruise line and it seemed there were many others with it.
I know now never to book on Norwegian.
By the way Norways drug laws consider anything above 5 grams a felony.
