Is Airline Food a Health Risk?

Airline food may look unappetizing, and it turns out it may also have the potential of making you sick. USA Today looked at government documents prepared by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and found many airline meals are prepared in unsanitary and unsafe conditions.
According to the newspaper, FDA inspectors cited many airline catering kitchens for suspected health and sanitation violations over the past two years.
The caterers were LSG Sky Chefs, Gate Gourmet, two of the world's biggest in in-flight catering, and Flying Food Group. The newspaper says the three caterers together prepare more than 100 million meals each year for U.S. carriers and international airlines flying from the U.S.
Together they operate 91 kitchens and cater all the major airlines including Delta, American, United, US Airways and Continental.
According to USA Today, the FDA reports show issues with food stored at improper temperatures, unclean equipment and workers with poor hygiene. The newspaper reports that at some facilities, there are "cockroaches, flies, mice and other signs of inadequate pest control."
USA Today obtained the documents under the Freedom of Information Act.
A public health sanitation consultant, Roy Costa, told the newspaper the conditions were ripe for food poisoning outbreaks and the situation with the in-flight caterers was "disturbing, getting worse and now poses a real risk of illness and injury to tens of thousands of airline passengers on a daily basis."
The three caterers told the newspaper they follow standards to keep the food safe and hire independent auditors for quality assurance. The airlines said they also monitor food that goes on their planes.

This article points to a much bigger problem, airline caterers as the rest of the food industry are poorly regulated and staffing and management are inadequate to assure that safe conditions are maintained. As a health inspector for most of my career I know its stories like this and the bad publicity they generate that can cause change. It only takes one mistake in a catering operation making thousands of meals a day to cause a disaster, and situation is ripe for it. Many many people who expereince an FBI die or are hospitalized in severe distress. I commend USA Today for its outsanding work, and freedom of the press we enjoy in the US should not be taken for granted its a powerful force for change.

This article reminds me of that movie, Airplane.
"What was there for dinner tonight?"
"Well, there were two choices: steak, fish."
"Yes, I remember. I had lasagna."

When the airlines had their own kitchens the food was clean, good and safe. Now is just garbage. I know what the kitchens are like food left out no refridgeration, food half cooked. No sanitation. No supervision.

Katie,
Take the British Airways evening flight from Miami to Heathrow in First Class. You won't be disappointed. First a cocktail on the ground, then hot and cold hors dourves. A menu to select 6 or 7 dinner entrees from and you eat when you want to. Then the wonderful dessert cart comes around, shortly followed by a cheese tray and after dinner liqueur. Breakfast is as equally delicious and assorted. You will never want to eat those peanuts again, although the price of the ticket is ridiculous.
They actually still serve food on airlines? Last time I flew was 14 years ago, and even then we didn't even rate PEANUTS, let alone a real meal!
Just what I need, another reason to avoid flying! Like the ridiculous ticket prices, long lines and invasive security checks, outrageous bag fees, and delays at the airports weren't enough! I'll stick to driving, thanks! I can carry as many bags as I want or need, I don't have to worry about the rental car expense once I get there, I can use a real bathroom, I can stop where I want and eat real food, and I don't have to worry about being jammed into my seat because of crowded conditions or catching germs from my fellow passengers (coach seats are best described as "Spam in a can" because of how they jam you in there with no room to breathe, let alone move!).
For the people dissatified with airline food, get to the airport with time to spare to check your luggage. And go to one of the many resturuants to get a descent meal.
