Where There's Danger, There are Tourists in Guatemala

The latest tourist attraction in Guatemala is a volcano that recently erupted and may still be dangerous.

The Associated Press is reporting thousands of tourists are flocking to see Pacaya volcano, where rivers of lava are flowing down the slopes, putting on quite a show, particularly at night. But officials say they are worried someone will get killed; that people are risking their lives to see the red hot attraction.

The volcano at Pacaya National Park erupted two weeks ago, and the park was closed even before the May 27 explosion, which killed a reporter who was hit by a shower of volcanic rock, AP reports. But the closure has not stopped visitors from getting what may be too close. They are bypassing the regular road and sneaking through a private farm in the village of Los Picitos. Local entrepreneurs are even charging $1.25 per person to take visitors up the mountain to see the flows.

"Just this weekend 2,000 people or more came by," Lourdes Barillas, head of a fundraising group that's trying to rebuild homes destroyed in the eruption, told AP. Hundreds of people live by the volcano, adding to the feeling among tourists that it may be safer than officials are saying.

A similar scenario exists on the Big Island of Hawaii, where tourists have also been known to bypass National Park Service warnings to see lava flow from Kilauea, and where there have been both deaths and injuries associated with the practice.

Guatemala is also recovering from a recent and devastating tropical storm.

Don't worry they will soon be here as ILLEGAL immegrants robbning us, crowding out emergency wards, and increasing our taxes. LIEBERALS ate great.

Gee, why on earth is it that any story that is entirely unrelated to politics, becomes political because some trigger-happy moron with a keyboard decides to reply and be very brusque, and information-negligent?

and if they are tourists from the States, they were citizens to begin with. Your comment in unrelated to this topic and entirely unfounded.

Some people like the rush when in the presents of danger. If they will spend money to wander around an active volcano that could erupt molten lava, burning them to a cinder in no time flat, --let them. Anybody that stupid the world could do well without anyway.

Danger in Guatemala? Yes, there's danger in Guatemala, but as a tourist I'd be more afraid of being kidnapped and murdered by the outlaw gangs that ply their trade than anything as benign as an erupting volcano. More tourists are killed annually by these thugs than by any volcano.

Actually, if a person is able to utilize their travel smarts, they won't have any problem. I lived in Guatemala city for months, and it wasn't any different than any other city. There's this reputation for it being extra-awful, particularly to foreigners, but it is just like traveling to New York City, or any other urbanized area in the United States. If people were intelligent, and careful when they traveled, many of the accidents that happen wouldn't. I'm not saying that it is full-proof, but given the lack of awareness by many people, you cannot blame it solely on random events. Thugs are smart, they know who to track, and people are dumb enough to give signals.
