Travel + Leisure is out with a list of "America's 30 Dirtiest Cities", and perhaps surprisingly, smoggy Los Angeles does not top the list -- it comes in at No. 3.

So what's the dirtiest city in America? Those voting in T+L's America's Favorite Cities survey say New York. "The City That Never Sleeps is also the city that never cleans, so it seems," according to the magazine.

Also ranking at the top in dirtiness are New Orleans, No. 2, perhaps because of Katrina (but maybe also because of Bourbon Street rowdiness); and Los Angeles and its smog ranks No. 3.

The top five dirtiest are rounded out by Philadelphia in the 4th spot and Las Vegas in the 5th. So what cities should Mother Nature fans flock to in a quest for clean? Survey respondents chose Minneapolis/St. Paul as the cleanest city in America.

Also ranking high in the cleanliness category are Portland, Denver, Austin, Santa Fe and San Diego. The Favorite Cities survey by T+L asked voters to rank top American cities in 30 different categories, including cleanliness.

The ratings were tough on some resort locales. While Honolulu came in as 8th cleanest city, Miami was ranked No. 7, as one of the dirtiest.

It looks like all cities have a problem with body litter. Body litter is
anything that is littered form the body. Cigarettes butts, gum, chewing
tobacco, spit, urine, feces and all other material that is handled by a
human and not disposed of properly all cities should enforce the
litter law and issue citations to those who litter. This would help
reduce litter and create revenue for the cities. It is the
responsibility of all business owners to maintain a clean environment.
P.S. What is Omaha, NE ranked? Don

NYC looks like a third world country. There are more rats than people in NY. The homlessness in NY is absolutely sick. I have been to almost evry city but nowhere, except NY do you find homless lying in the middle of the sidewalks in good neighborhoods where you literally have to step over them to walk down the street. Also, there are illegal aliens everywhere in NY living 20 to an apartment.

BTW..I grew up in NYC moved away but now am back here. It is clean when you consider all the people that live & work there. All the tourists thousands of other people who live outside the city and commute to work there everyday!! Pretty clean when you consider all that. What should the city do? Follow everyone around and pick up after them?

Weston, Florida is the cleanset city . Just outside Ft. Lauderdale. Even a law that you can not smoke in public parks. This city while only has about 66,000 residents has lots of people who go there for many reasons. Always clean.

Why should it be a surprise that NYC is the dirtiest city? Have you LOOKED at the people that walk around NYC?

It's obvious that none of you have been to El Paso, TX. The dirtiest city I've ever been to.
