As the World Expo 2010 Shanghai is set to launch on May 1st, 2010, China has lifted some of its travel restrictions on individuals with illnesses in preparation for the event, specifically individuals with HIV and leprosy.
Shanghai is expecting to host approximately 100 million visitors due to The World Expo which runs until October 2010.

Dr. Wu Zunyou, director of the National Center for AIDS/STD Control and Prevention said the ban was put in place "at a time when HIV/AIDS was relatively new, and our understanding about HIV/AIDS has since accumulated". China's State Council stated that the ban put in place based on "limited knowledge" of HIV at the time and also was an inconvenience to the country when hosting international events.

The ban originally included travelers with HIV and leprosy along with people with "serious" mental illnesses, infectious tuberculosis and "infectious diseases likely to cause significant harm to public health" according to The State Council.

The ban has been in place for approximately two decades according to The Associated Press. With improved reporting of HIV/AIDS statistics in China, AIDS became the top killer among infections diseases in 2008. According to Chinese government statistics, the number of Chinese confirmed to be living with HIV-AIDS was 319,877. However, Health Minister Chen Zhu believes that number should be closer to 740,000.

According to Breaking Travel News, China was one of approximately 50 countries worldwide that still had restrictions in place against carriers of the HIV virus. The change follows on the heals of moves made by the United States and South Korea earlier this year. Other countries that still have an HIV ban on travelers include Oman, Qatar, Sudan and Yemen according to a list on Livestrong.com.

The change in restrictions has been welcomed by the U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon as well as prominent AIDS activist Edwin Cameron, a judge on South Africa's constitutional Court. Cameron, who also has HIV, stated that the ban "nearly led to the cancellation of my last trip to China because of a misunderstanding between government departments". He believes the original restrictions were "illogical" and that "I am relieved this will never happen again to anyone living with HIV".

Ban Ki-moon stated that "punitive policies and practices only hamper the global AIDS response," and urges other countries to follow in China's footsteps.

The change in restrictions was embraced by the World Health Organization (WHO), stating that it is a "significant step in the right direction".

The controversy surrounding the Shanghai Expo only steps up a notch! China not only ripped off a Japanese song for its Shanghai Expo theme, and reworked Gumby for its mascot, but the not so iconic China Pavilion is actually a copy of the Bratislava Radio Pyramid. When will people educate themselves on Chinese food im English and have been to china many times i have never seen people eat cat or dogs the Chinese food is healthy and good for you in the usa and uk they have a problem .

America has been called a "fast food nation" and for good reason. Everyday, one out of four Americans eats fast food. If you are eating out, a fast food restaurant is often the cheapest option, but unfortunately, not usually the healthiest one. Eating just one fast food meal can pack enough calories, sodium and fat for an entire day, but the quick-and-cheap temptation can be hard to resist.

Some of you are perhaps the most closed minded people I have ever come across. You know nothing about China and yet you want to judge the people, the government, and their culinary choices. Seriously? Go pick up a history book or google it and learn something about differing countries and their customs before you start acting like yours is the best.

Had I been a "betting man", then I'd have bet that the Chinese would've done what the USA should've done, but failed to do: Treat HIV and AIDS as a public health issue, and quarantine those infected within the country, and prohibit travel into the country by those infected from without, particularly non-PRC citizens. I wonder how the 320,000 to 750,000 "Chinamen" got infected. It must have something to do with the blood supply, which is still unsafe in the USA due to infected homo's and I.V. drug users selling their blood and plasma. If the USA's blood supply is contaminated, you can imagine what Chinese blood is like. Guess the "Chinks" aren't so smart after all.

It is one of the more beautiful countries I have visited. In some ways, actually a lot, it reminds me of what USA looked like back in the 1700-1800's. As in the area similar parallels of latitude, around the 45TH.
I found out the hard way that you have to ask if there is Holy, sacred areas, land, and if you are welcome to be on the property. Believe me, you may think that you are miles away from anywhere and end up in a jail that you never thought existed.
If I could I would love to be able to go back and spend a lot of time. Both the fact that I am not smart enough to learn the language and the lack of funds will require me to remember the time I did spend there. Out side of jail that is.

I guess your government didn't think so when they borrowed billions of dollars from China. The US is on the hook for this money, so call them what you want; they own your ass!

Hey, guess what? All of Europe eats dogs and cats, also uses them for the fur trade. All of Mexico, Canada AND America routinely kill cats and dogs (who are tame and belong to people!) for medical experiments or just dissection and vivisection.
China is hardly what we should be worried about. Everyone expects China to be eating dogs, but what about Britain? Meat is often marked as 'beef' when it's really cat, and fur marked as 'fox' when it's really the black cat down the street that was caught and skinned alive.
If you really think China is the problem regarding animal cruelty, you're just being racist.

Now it is time for us to lift the embargo against Cuba. 50 years is enough. Castro has outlived 5 US Presidents. I want to buy my cigars and rum here.
Not going North or South to get them.
And it is very hard to see Cuba today. It is a beautiful country and the people are very nice. This is suppose to be a free country. Cuba is the only country we are not allowed to visit. Feel free to visit Iran or North Korea though.
listen to this song on youtube
Jackson Browne Going down to Cuba
Find the one with the video of Cuba. The country is even more beautiful in person.
